Sienna…

Is on a very steep hill.

Access to old town via the gates

The winding ancient streets are charming. Apparently Sienna was the main city in Tuscany until the plague swept through it in the 14th century. Florence ‘took over’ and allegedly Sienna was so wiped out financially it couldn’t afford to ‘modernise’. However that may have looked back then. It is to the deight of visitors that it remains as it was.

Walking to the Duamo
Wow!

This was a stunning site. No queues for going inside and half the price of the one in Florence. Yorkshire Lass knows a bargain when she sees one, so tickets purchased and in we go. Now…thing is, I have been surrounded by the walking tour sheep, shepherded by an umbrella weilding leader. All wired for sound and completely oblivious to anybody in their path. Today when I wanted to deploy my covert tagging along tactic, not an elevated brolley in sight! I cannot tell you anything about the sights we encountered.

Except they were beautiful. No idea what all the symbolism was about. The paintings were amazing, subject matter a bit macabre, but thats how it goes in churches!

Music?

These beautifully written and decorated books from the 1400’s we thought may be music to chant by! Who knows? I shall ask my music teacher when I get back. Can’t help thinking the lines are staves.

So we had lunch, then it rained so we took shelter and had cake.

The cafe on the corner!
Supermarket!

So off we popped. To do a ridiculous round the houses route back to the escalators! Passing my own personal supermarket along the way and walking unnecessarily all the way around the local barracks!

Home rejoicing at our endevours.
