What a delightful country this is. The scenery is stunning and the people are so friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately we seem to have encountered a bit of a weather phenomenom. This was also the case in France and in Italy. ‘You should have been here last week, it was twenty five degrees, or next week will be better, how long are you staying?’ Whether my shorts will ever see the light of day is now open to conjecture. BetFred have opened odds against.
Llubjana is a beautiful city, we walked a lot of it last night. True, we may have walked more of it than originally intended, that 180 degree thing kicked in again! But it was lovely, all be it refreshing in the rain. We did eventually find a cosy place for something to eat and drink, and managed to find our way back to our hotel without further geographical miscalculation.
So, to car rental. Finding the actual office proved to be way more challenging than Google maps implied. Booking.com showed a map with sunny skies and throngs of people in shorts outside a MacDonalds. All very misleading. But we are nothing if not determined, and there it was, Free2rent car hire. I can’t help thinking that the advertising accuracy bar is set a little lower here as free it certainly isn’t. Espcially when you realise you are returning the car on a National Holiday and there will be nobody to check it in so feel it necessary to take out the full damage waiver. I returned my Virgin Money Credit card to my wallet where it is having a nice lay down in the dark.
It is many years since I drove on the ‘other side’. I have never driven on the ‘other side’ with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car and where the door handle will not, no matter how hard you try, change gear for you. I decided not to share this information with the ever so polite gentleman (boy) who showed me to the car. I blagged it. And no, I have never even sat in a Renault. I probably should have made friends with all of the controls before setting off down into the main city, espcially the windscreen wipers with their many settings, but hey ho isn’t retrospect a wonderful thing? Off to Bled we go. Twice around the city, a quick (illegal) stop to load up our rucksacks and very strict instructions to Mrs. Google maps. I thank all the Gods in all of the universes, she is still doing her thing in English! I know, I know … but remember please we are of a certain vintage.

The thought of having four days now before our next encounter with any mode of transport other than ‘the car’ fills us with joy. The snow is a little disconcerting, maybe if I could open the boot I might find snow chains…
