Italy

I am a little bit in love with Italy. It is on my bucket list to retun. The two places visited couldn’t be more different. Ventimiglia is a bustling coastal town, friendly and welcoming. Okay, maybe our hotel was down a side street and had a locked door with no reception area. Maybe when we finally got to our room it wasn’t quite what we ordered. Perhaps the locks and stairs were a bit tricky, but they were so very nice about it. We took the recommendation of the ever so lovely girl who showed us to our room and dined at their cousins’ well hidden restaurant. Our meal was wonderful. Fresh sea bream, cooked to perfection and washed down by a cheeky chilled white.

So to Verona. Via Milan station, which is every bit as beautiful and intresting as all the things we had read. However, the ladies toilets use a tap and go entry system. I queued and waited patiently in line. The poor traveller in front of me tapped and got a big red no entry sign up. Being the kindly soul I am I tapped my card for her to go through. Nobody should travel on a train with a full bladder. But then my card wouldn’t tap. I got the no entry sign. The queue behind became restless and I had to vacate the ladies with my mission unaccomplished. Seems I am capable of chaos wherever I go. We made haste to our first class coach and had a very comfortable journey to Verona.

Verona has turned out to be a bit of a gem. Our hotel is lovely, it was very easy to find, it has a reception, a lift, a rather handsome concierge, a room as ordered, a blinding array of breakfast foods and although there isn’t an actual bar, they happily serve drinks to you. This blissful combination of stuff has made our stay fabulous.

We have been proper tourists, dined in the tourist restaurants, walked around the old walls, photographed the things tourists photograph and partaken of the local apperitifs, even when we weren’t dining. We like what the turn into spritzers here. The weather has been kind so we unpacked our one and only dress each and adorned our sandals. we havewalked miles and soaked it all up. Next stop Llubjana…
